What Does Being Educated Really Mean?

What does it really mean to be educated? Some say an educated man must hold some type of degree that shows he has been to college. Others may say that an educated person must have a certain degree of "natural raw intelligence." So what does being educated really mean?

Again, most people feel that in order for one to be considered "educated," one must have attended at least a few years of college. Currently, formal guidelines are in place, should one want to be officially recognized as an authority in a particular subject or field. For instance, most practitioners in the medical field are required to hold a medical degree in order to be authorized to practice medicine.

Most people would agree this method of "checks and balances" has done much to protect the public, and It certainly has.

On the other hand, the idea that an individual needs a formal or higher education to be considered educated, and thus have the ability to be successful, is just simply not true.

One perfect example of this was the auto manufacturer Henry Ford. Despite his lack of formal education, (it is rumored he had less than 3 years) he built a very successful automobile empire that is still thriving today. He had thousands of people in his employment, some of them were considered the smartest minds in the world at that time.

Another example was Thomas A. Edison, one of the greatest inventors that ever lived. He had only a few months of formal education. He learned to read and write mostly by his mother, and yet much of the technology he invented has been taught at some of the most prestigious colleges in the world!

The fact is that each one of us has the ability to succeed at what ever we choose whether we are considered "educated" or not. A person who relies to heavily on formal education to succeed, can find themselves in serious trouble financially.

Recently, I had a brief business association with an M.I.T. Graduate/investment banker on wall street. My business association with him was brief, due to the fact that he seemed to be anything but educated outside of the scope of his formal training. This may be why he is struggling financially at this time.

In conclusion, to me, an educated person is someone who can accomplish what ever they want in life, whether formally trained or not.
