Should I Replace My Carpet Or Have IT Cleaned? Part 1.

Many people are faced with the question of whether to replace carpeting in their home, or just having it cleaned. The price of good carpeting is expensive in comparison to cleaning, so definitely the decision to replace should not be taken lightly. Having your carpet professionally cleaned, or even cleaning it yourself can be an inexpensive alternative that just about anyone can appreciate.

So how does one decide whether to have their carpet cleaned or have it replaced? Well, there are many factors to consider when answering that question, some being:

1. How old is the carpeting?

Depending on the "grade" (meaning the quality) of the carpet, and of course the amount of traffic it has received, will help you decide based upon the age. Most carpets last at least 7 to 10 years before really needing replacement. Some can last even longer than that.

2. What color is the carpet?

Darker colored carpet of course will hide a lot more soil and stain damage than a lighter shade. If you have a white carpet that is heavily soiled and 7 to 10 years old, you may want to consider replacement. Than again sometimes one can be amazed at how well a cleaning can turn out.

3. How many times has your carpet been cleaned?

Most carpets have a protective coating on the fibers that is designed to help keep them clean. It's almost like non - stick cookware. When you vacuum or clean the carpet, the protective coating causes the soil and stains to be extracted easier due to it's non - stick properties. Unfortunately, cleaning can wear away this coating. If you've had your carpet cleaned multiple times in the past, it may be harder to get it clean, or keep it clean, thus qualifying it for replacement. I would still try though!

4. Is the carpet delaminated?

De-lamination is when the backing on the carpet separates. It will almost give the appearance that the carpet needs to be stretched, but stretching won't help. If the carpet is de-laminated it's usually best if you replace it.

The fact is that it's worth the time and effort to always try and save a carpet by cleaning when ever possible. Many times you will be able to put off replacement for years by doing so. Professional cleaning using truck mounted equipment is the best method, especially if your carpet is heavily soiled.
