How to Create Business Postcards on your Own

By: Brad Kartel

Postcards used to be just quick fixes to letting someone know that you remember them. You can buy a nice postcard, write a short note, affix a stamp and off it goes to its destination. But marketers eventually thought that postcards can also be effective marketing tools. For one, they are cheaper to produce and cheaper to send out as compare to brochures and other mailers. Many businesses nowadays resort to postcard printing in order to inform their customers of a big sale, a special event, or to just inform them of a change in address or telephone number.

If you are  a small business owner who needs some postcards but you think that having it done in a professional postcard printing house would be costly, then you can do it yourself. All it takes for you is to have a computer, colored printer, and some basic layout skills. You will be sending out those postcards in no time. Below are some guidelines that you can take into consideration when making your own postcards.

1.Think about the purpose of your postcards. Are you making an announcement or are you pushing people to make a purchase? Keep your goal in mind as you develop the contents of your postcard.

  1. Write a draft of your text. Make a catchy headline or title and then keep the body of the text straight to the point.
  2. Determine the graphics or photos that you will use. A postcard has a very small area, so choose your graphics wisely. The best choice would be just one good photograph that will be digitally enhanced and blown up. If not, two small photos could also do. The graphics, on the other hand, will just be dependent on what you need. You do not always have to insert graphics.
  3. It would help you if you could draw a rough draft of how the front and back portion of your postcard will look like. Do not forget to include the important elements like your contact details as well as the area for the mailing label. Position all the elements as to where you would want to place them.
  4. Desktop publishing programs usually have postcard layout templates that you can use. You can just draw up the layout that looks like what you have drawn and then you can easily put in the necessary elements that you have listed down. Just follow instructions on how you can insert them.
  5. If you have some remaining white space on your layout, you can think about what you can do with it. You can either just leave it as a blank area so that it will be like your reader’s rest area or you can fill it up with graphics. You can also fill it up with color, so that it will not remain white.
  6. Play around. You can always tinker around with your design, after all this is your postcard. If this is your first time to do this, then maybe you can make two or three studies and then print out a copy of each one. Post your print outs on the wall and look at them closely before you decide on your best design.

Making your own business postcards can be an exciting new activity for you. Do look up those mailers in the past that have interested you, as you might be able to draw out design and slogan ideas from them. Make your next postcard printing project an easy one.
