Business Analyst Phone Interview Skills

By: Samantha Lorry

A person who likes problem-solving and using IT skills may consider a career as a business systems analyst. This sort of employment will require a college degree emphasizing information technology skills as well as skills in management, business, marketing, and the necessary supporting background in math, economics, accounting and related topics. Most with a really successful business analyst career will go to a master's degree as well.

Business analyst jobs are challenging and can involve interesting travel, but one thing that makes them attractive to many is how well they pay. Starting salaries can be as high as $75,000, depending upon your location and salary growth potential is extremely exciting when considering the field. It is not for the timid, because even with a great degree program, new hires must learn a lot on the job.

Of course, a business analyst career only becomes real when a person is hired for a job, and preparing for application and interview techniques is essential. Currently, many companies will conduct a telephone interview as part of the process of weeding out candidates and choosing which ones to ask to the live interview.

You should be as ready for a telephone interview as you are for any other one. This type of interview is usually conducted on either your cell or home phone, so you don't have to do it at work. Regarding your cover letter, you need to clearly state when you are available to for a phone call, and when you are at work. Phone interviews usually take longer than a 30 minute break, so don't try to cram it into too little time.

It is best to use a land line telephone to avoid poor reception or a dropped connection, but if not make sure you have great reception before starting. During the interview, do not take any other calls and have the area you are in free of distractions. If you have the feature of call waiting or holding, it may best to ask the interviewer if you can call back so that it can be disabled. It is impolite to eat or drink during the call or do anything else that you normally wouldn't do when being face to face, such as smoking or chewing gum

Prepare yourself in advance for the interview. Practice answering questions that are commonly asked. What are your strengths and weaknesses? What are your short and long term career goals? What makes you a better choice for this position than anyone else? Tell us about your accomplishments which have prepared you for this job. Have pen and paper available so that you can jot down questions during the interview. Be logged onto the company website. And refer to your resume to make sure that you say the same thing it says!

Answers need to be concise and clearly enunciated. Remember that body language gets lost in voice only communication and add color to your speaking by smiling as you speak. Some even recommend standing up during an interview to be alert and focused. Don't be longwinded but always indicate that the interviewer may always ask for you to expand. Whether scheduled or a surprise, your future in a business analyst career can hinge on a phone call.
