7 Commonly Asked Questions About #Laser #Eye #Surgery

By: Ken Kelly

I’m sure most everyone has heard (or has their own) laser eye surgery success stories.

With the rate of success these procedures are achieving, Lasik has been made a household name. In fact, Lasik has become so common and been proven so effective that many insurance carriers are considering covering the costs- as they well should.

Because of the huge demand, the procedure has also become more affordable and is now an option for more people.

No matter how affordable, successful, or common these procedures are, most people are still hesitant to put their ability to see into the hands of a surgeon.

The idea of having a white-hot laser slicing into your eyes is probably not the most comforting thought either. The best way to calm your fears is to ask questions- don’t be afraid to ask any and all questions you may have and do as much research as you feel necessary to make sure you are as comfortable as possible with the idea before you actually make a decision.

To help you get started, we’ve answered 7 of the most commonly answered questions about eye surgery.

1. Q: What is Laser eye surgery?

A: Basically, it is a procedure to correct your vision enough that you are no longer dependent on glasses or contacts. Lasik, which stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is one of the most common forms of eye surgery.

2. Q: How does Lasik correct vision?

A: The answer to this one might be another discomforting one, but it’s important to know. The reason that laser eye surgery works so well is that it actually changes the shape of your cornea, that clear disk that allows light to enter. Using a type of surgical knife called a microkeratome, the doctor creates a flap in your cornea which is then folded back to allow an excimer laser to properly shape the cornea. This is the main procedure, but there are variations of it, such as intralase.

3. Q: Is Lasik right for me?

A: The only way to answer this is to do your research and perhaps schedule a consultation to get your questions answered. You also have to consider whether the procedure is covered by your health insurance and whether or not you can afford it.

4. Q: Could medical conditions interfere with the procedure?

A: Absolutely. You need to be aware, and make your doctor aware of any conditions you may have as well as any medications you are taking. Some medications, such as steroids, can slow down the healing process significantly. Auto-immune disorders also slow the healing process, and if you suffer from any, laser surgery is probably not the best option.

5. Q: Can all eyes be reshaped with a laser?

A: No. The only way to know if you are a good candidate is to consult a doctor. Certain conditions such as dry eye, thinning corneas, or pupil disorders often rule out laser eye surgery for many people. Also, If your eye prescription has been changed within the last year or so, it may be wise to hold off for awhile.

6. Q: Is there a 100% guarantee?

A: No. As with any procedure, you can only hope for the best possible outcome. Often, the results are not permanent, and in some cases the procedure will have to be repeated. You may also develop certain conditions that you didn’t have before, such as dry eye contrast sensitivity, or in rare cases, blindness.

7. Q: How do I find a doctor?

A: The best way to find the best doctor is to ask others who have had procedures done. These patients will give honest opinions that will help you feel more confident in selecting your doctor. Ask friends, family, co-workers, etc. Your regular doctor may also be able to make suggestions for you. Just be sure the doctor you choose is experienced, has up-to-date technology, can answer all your questions, and that you feel completely comfortable.
